The Animale Series: A Connection with Nature
The Animale series emerged from a collaboration with learners at the Nakayale Private Academy in northern Namibia. I invited the students to reflect on their instinctive animals, drawing inspiration from the natural world around them. Using only natural materials—Himba ochre, river clay, and seasonal botanicals—we set out to create a series that is both personal and rooted in nature.
During the photographic shoot, we communicated through our primal instincts. Movement, sound, and gesture replaced words, allowing for a raw and authentic interaction. This approach fostered a profound connection among the participants, enabling them to express their inner selves through their chosen animal spirits.
Natural light played a crucial role in capturing the essence of the Wamboland landscape, which shifts in mood throughout the day. Each photograph reflects not just the artistic endeavours of the students but also the beauty of their environment. The series invites viewers to appreciate the interplay between art and nature, highlighting how instinct and creativity can intertwine in meaningful ways.
The Animale series serves as a testament to the power of nature in nurturing creativity. It encourages us to reconnect with our instincts and the world around us, inspiring a deeper appreciation for both art and the environment. This project stands as a reminder of the beauty that arises when we embrace our natural surroundings and express ourselves through them.
