"The Collage Aesthetic recognises multiplicity of form and content, duality, contradiction, juxtaposition, complexity. . . and expansion as the essential qualities of modern life and modern art." - April Kingsley
“Everything had broken down and new things had to be made out of the fragments. Collage was like an image of the revolution within me—not as it was, but as it might have been.” - Kurt Schwitters
The idea was ignited when Marcii Goosen, was faced with a decision on what to do with the piles and piles of magazines she’d collected over the years. “When the economy crashed I decided that I wasn’t allowed to buy another magazine until I’d gone through all of my existing ones and used them to create art.” She believes we live in a collage reality, constantly deconstructing, recycling, copying and pasting, splicing, and re-assembling old concepts and cultures into a new and meaningful whole. Thus Club Collage is the perfect metaphor for the times we live in.
These events are not merely a vehicle for this beautifully basic yet complex surrealist artistic technique, but a space to flex hands-on play and open ourselves to a creative cognitive modus operandi that taps into the subconscious mind. Our long-term goal is to inspire people from diverse contexts to step away from their everyday routines and join in on the collage experience, as a means of building community and trust through creation, conversation and collaboration.
